From unit rates to linear functions…setting the foundation

using the TI-Nspire CX graphing calculator

During middle school, students are expected to develop an understanding of

proportional relationships and represent these using verbal descriptions, tables,

graphs and equations. This begins with unit rates and progresses to linear functions.

Making the connection between unit rate, rate of change, and slope can help build a
conceptual understanding of linear functions. Understanding what makes a

relationship proportional helps students determine what type of equation models a

given situation. Using the TI-Nspire CX provides a great opportunity for students to

investigate unit rate, proportionality
