percentage points.
Interpret your kite diagram:
In the lower intertidal zone, you will mostly find mollusks, or snails and bivalves. As you move away from
the ocean into the middle intertidal sandy beach, the mollusk population remains high, with a few
polychaeta worms and crustaceans scattered in – but by the time you are in the upper intertidal sandy
beach zone, the mollusks have all but disappeared and the crustaceans (crabs) are the dominant life form.
Mollusks dominate the lower and middle zones, and crustaceans dominate the upper intertidal sandy
beach zone. The lower zones are wetter, and organisms without a hard shell, like polychaeta worms,
need to stay moist. Crabs are more protected than snails and can survive the drier upper zones better.
