are cold blooded, and amphibians need to be near the water to breed. They do better in the warmer
climates, like Florida-Virginia, where temperatures rarely are below freezing. The greatest number of
salamanders is in North Carolina and Virginia, both of which have mountain habitats with a lot of diverse
micro-habitats where salamanders thrive and speciate.
Example 3: South Carolina is home to 14 species of lizards representing a wide diversity of physical
characteristics and habitat selection. 11 of these species are native, while 3 species have been
introduced to the area.
