Reptile diversity and range in SC. 1 square = 10 individuals.
Interpret your kite diagram
There are a few lizard species adapted to the sandy soils of the coastal plains (island glass lizard, eastern
glass lizard, and the Texas horned lizard) and they do well in the sandy salty environment. Other lizards
do better in iron rich western soils, like most of the skinks. They live in wooded habitats with lots of leaf
litter in which to hide. Green Anoles are tolerant of a wide range of conditions, leading to high numbers all
throughout the range (Eastern to Western South Carolina). The 3 introduced species (house gecko, Texas
horned lizard, and the brown anole) haven’t taken hold yet, and are in lower numbers than the native
species.
