               1. Introduction

                       he prominent historical change during the last decade
                   Tof the twentieth century in the East Asian (Northeast
               and Southeast Asian) world has been the shift from the politics
               of the Cold War to the geo economics of the post Cold War era.
               During the latter, Northeast and Southeast Asia represented a
               geostrategic battle zone of potential war. However, the major
               Cold War line which ran through Northeast and Southeast Asia
               was the eruption zone of four major wars between 1945 and 75,
               namely the Chinese Civil War 1945-1949; the Korean War of
               1950-1953; the First Indochina War of 1946-1954; and the sec-
               ond Indochina War of Vietnam War of 1965-1975.  These sub
