15. The Articles







          Articles


               ‘A’, ‘an’ and ‘the’ are called articles       . In fact, articles are adjectives. Articles are

          used with names.

               Examples :      (a) I saw  dog sitting near the gate.

                                (b) The   Taj Mahal is a beautiful monument.

                                (c) This is an  engine of train.


                 , A  an  andthe  are called articles.

          Use of The


               The   is called the definite article because it is used when we speak of some

          particular or definite persons or things.

               Examples :  (a) Mountain Ranges : The Everest, The Alps, The Andes, The Rockies

                                (b) The Rivers : The Ganga, The Nile, The Amazon


                                (c) Gulfs and Bays : The Persian Gulf, The Hudson Bay


                                (d) Famous Monuments: The Victoria Memorial, The Eiffel Tower

                                (e) Oceans and Seas : The Pacific Ocean, The Mediterranean Sea


          Use of A and An

               ‘A’  and ‘An’   are called indefinite articles because they do not point out any

          particular or definite person or thing.


               The indefinite articles ‘an’ and ‘a’ are used :
