2.  Our class teacher baked a chocolate cake.

          In the above sentences, the highligthed words are the subjects, and the underlined
          words are verbs. Let us see what happens if we remove either the subject or the

          verb.

               1.  The children music.

               2.  baked a chocolate cake.

          These sentences don’t make sense. Thus, we see that every sentence should have a

          subject and a verb in order to make complete sense.

          1. Subject

               A subject is a person, an animal, a thing or a place we talk about in a sentence.

          A subject may consists of one word             or many words     .

               Examples :      (a) The    lion  is roaring.

                                (b) Rohan     is going to Delhi.

                                (c) My pen     is very lucky.

               The words the lion, Rohan and my pen are called subjects                  .

          2. Predicate

               A predicate is what we talk about the subject. A predicate may consist of one

          word or    many words. It must have a verb.

               Examples :      (a) The lion is roaring     .

                                (b) Rohan is going to Delhi       .

                                (c) My pen is very lucky      .

               The words is roaring, is going to Delhi and is very lucky are called predicates                  .
