complexities, extra documentation is necessary for online sources of
information.
The online researcher needs to document when and where source
material was viewed. The date that the material was accessed, the
name of the library that was used to access a subscription database,
and the address of a website are necessary for the Works Cited list.
For that reason, printing out all the material accessed online is
strongly recommended. The date, the database used, and most other
relevant information will be on the printed copy for easy reference.
Many databases provide the convenient option of mailing a full-text
article to yourself. In addition, you often have the option of copying or
sending yourself a citation in the style you wish to use for your Works
Cited page or the References page. Two words of caution are
necessary. First, if you use the citation option, be sure that you select
the correct style from the drop-down menu. That seems obvious, but it
is easy to forget. Second, be aware that automatic citation formatters
may vary sightly from database to database and may not be up to
date. It’s always a good idea to check the citation against this text or
against another reliable source.
