Referencing Sources within Your Paper
Within your paper, references to your sources are parenthetical
references, not footnotes. APA style calls for brief references
enclosed in parentheses and placed immediately after the author’s
name, after the referenced idea, or at the end of the sentence that
contains the idea. For each work cited within the text of your paper,
you will place a bibliographic reference in a separate section called
References.
One thing to consider as you write your paper is whether to mention
an author’s name in the text of your paper or to put it in a parenthetical
reference. A good rule of thumb is to use the author’s name in the text
of your paper if you are discussing that author’s original research or
ideas. If the author is reporting a fact, as in a reference book, an
interview, or a news story, put the author’s name in a parenthetical
reference.
The following examples show the APA style of reference.
A Work by a Single Author.
If you have already used the author’s name in the sentence or
paragraph where the parenthetical reference occurs, use the year as a
reference.
