Example
According to Merlin Stone, early societies were matrilineal
because humanity had not yet figured out the role of men in
producing children. To our earliest ancestors, females were the
sole givers of life (10–11).
If you have not used the author’s name in the sentence or paragraph,
place the author’s last name and the page number in parentheses
after the quote or paraphrase of the author’s words. Position the
parenthetical reference as close to the end of the sentence as
possible, but before the period that ends the sentence. No punctuation
is needed between the author’s name and the page number.
Example
A thirty-minute organizing session every Friday afternoon is
recommended as a way to keep an office functioning smoothly
(Morgenstern 109).
A Work by Multiple Authors.
As with a single author, if the authors are already mentioned in the
sentence or paragraph in which you discuss their work, the page
number alone serves as the reference. If you have not mentioned the
author’s names, your parenthetical reference should include their last
names separated by and along with the page number.
