Practice 15-6 Correcting Run-ons with a


               Dependent Word



               In each sentence, underline the spot where the run-on occurs. Write

               RO in the blank to the left of the sentence if it is a run-on (fused

               sentence), CS if it is a comma splice. Correct the following sentences,

               using a different dependent word with each.



                                        1. The throbbing in Ryan’s jaw became worse he

                        picked up the phone to call the dentist.



                                        2. The setting sun painted the lake red-gold, the
                        breeze ruffled its mirrored surface.



                                        3. A water shortage developed the city imposed a

                        ban on outdoor watering.


                                        4. The women’s softball team has won every game

                        this season, the men’s team has turned in its worst

                        performance ever.



                                        5. Helen won tickets to the concert she is looking for

                        someone to go with her.
