               Method 4: Semicolon and




               Transitional Expression






               A run-on sentence may also be corrected with a connecting word or

               phrase that functions as a transitional expression, underscoring the
               relationship between the two clauses.




                    Pattern: Independent clause; therefore, independent clause.




               A semicolon precedes the transitional expression and a comma
               follows it. With the words thus and then, the comma is often omitted.

                      Traffic was heavy the rain made it almost impossible to see the

                    road.




                       Traffic was heavy; furthermore, the rain made it almost
