in Te Puna aged about 68.
Rapunga Kupu Akoako: (korero taken from "Boroughdale Murray, the
beginning of a NZ dynasty") Ngatote Katene Cotton Murray; was a
familar and popular maritime figure in Tauranga. His first vessel was the
"KiaOra" a sailing craft of about 26ft. This provided many people with
transport to Tauranga from Te Puna and Matakana Island. His next ship was

the "Minnie" (similar in size to the KiaOra). For several more years this
provided the means of transport. Then about this time the marine engine came
on the scene and somewhat revolutionised this mode of conveyance.
Mr Murray bought a 30ft launch from Mr Banks, mine manager at Waihi. A beautifully built double
skinned cruiser stern hull, powered by a two cylinder, eleven horse power marine engine which gave
the craft a fair pace of speed. This launch also provided for many years a way of transport to
Tauranga by water. The local people patronised the service. Football teams were also fortunate in
having this transport and they too became real patrons. Mr Murrays launch was named "Waipa", he
also had affiliations with the coastal scows or sailing vessels the "Rangi" and the "Moa".
Living at his home at Raropua, he could see quite plainly the "Moa" or the "Rangi" at thier berths at
Omokoroa wharf. At a flag signal hoisted on the mast Mr Murray would proceed to the berth and there
prepare to tow the vessel out past the Mount entrance and there the sails would take over. Many
times too he would tow them in from the Mount entrance to the Omokoroa jetty. These two scows
played a very important and vital part in the transport to Auckland of the timber from the
Whakamarama Timber Companys saw mill from 1912 onwards.
