Te Rarawa Marae
In the summer of 1940 fifteen young men from Pukepoto gathered for a final farewell
at Te Rarawa Marae before going off to war. Music played thru the night with
speeches and then the young men performing an impromptu march in the hall.
Despite the dangers involved, signing up for military service was an appealing
option for many Maori in rural settlements such as Pukepoto. Opportunities for paid
work were few and far between, as a result the chance to travel and to collect a
regular wage was taken up by many Te Rarawa.
