John Povey, Rifleman #21534, enlisted with BCoy 3 NZ Rifle Brigade,

16 Reinforcements. He fought and died at Messines, West Flanders,
Belgium aged 21yrs according to his enlisted records and is buried in St
Quentin Cabaret Military Cemetry, West Flanders, Belgium. John was
actually 16yrs of age when he enlisted and was 17yrs when he was killed in
action.

Johnny’s brothers Andrew (Pioneer Maori Battalion), Darcy (3 NZ Rifle

Brigade) and Pai (Pioneer Maori Battalion 2 Contingent) also enlisted.
John’s; great grandmother Ta Ngapaura Puatai is a sister of Te Ripi;
Rangatira o Pukepoto and Ahipara.
