The unveiling of the Angel Statue, Kaitaia 1916
na Riapo Puhipi; Rangatira
On 24 March 1916 the first sculpted memorial erected to commemorate
Aotearoa's First World War dead was unveiled at the corner of Alan Bell
Drive and Commerce St. The Kaitaia War Memorial has considerable
significance as a monument initiated by Riapo Puhipi. Its bilingual
inscription, its bicultural concerns and the fact that it was a Maori initiative
in a substantially Maori community make it of special cultural
significance.
