Guidelines for Selection Members of Council
Policy Council will comprise a broad, experienced and competent representation
of the membership of the Institute and provide able leadership to the
Institute;
By resolution passed by Council on September 21, 1985, the Nominating
Committee shall give due consideration to the following guidelines when
nominating persons for Council;
1. only persons of demonstrated competence shall be nominated
2. consideration shall be given to past involvement of a prospective
nominee in the affairs of the Institute including service to the
Institute and service on committees of the Institute.
3. consideration shall be given to the desirability of obtaining on
Council a balance of the members of the Institute including lawyers
and non-lawyer, patent and trade mark agents; a balance between
representatives from industry and from private practice; and a
geographic balance
4. consideration shall be given to the desirability of rotating Council
membership among different firms and companies
5. the nominating committee shall not nominate two persons who
are members, associates, employees or partners of the same
company, firm or practice.
By-Law 10 (e) The Election Process:
By-Law 10 (f) Nominees for Councillor and Officer positions shall be elected by
resolution at the Annual Meeting of the Institute.
The slate of nominees shall be presented in the report of the Nominating
Committee and is included in the notice of the Annual General meeting
which is provided in written form to members at least fourteen days prior
to every Annual Meeting.
By-Law 10 (g) Other nominations must be filed by written notice with the Secretary of
IPIC no later than five days prior to the Annual Meeting.
