For those of us who have suffered back pain, you

know that it can totally disrupt your life. Even simple

things like walking to the bathroom can be agony.

Fortunately, there are ways to prevent back pain from

            herniated discs.

Before explaining what you can do to prevent back

pain, you need to understand what happens in your back

that causes the pain. There are many potential causes of

back pain. This booklet will focus on back pain due to

            disc problems.

Intervertebral discs serve as shock absorbers between

the bones of the spine. The disc is made up of two

components. The outer part known as the anulus fibrosis

is made up of 13 rings of fibers. This is what provides

structure to the disc. The inner part, known as the

nucleus pulposus, is a jelly like substance. This part is

what allows the disc to serve as a cushion. The outer

part of the disc helps contain the inner part of the disc .
