                            Theories of management






               3.1 Classical theories of management

               The classical school of management theories were developed during the Industrial
               Revolution of the mid-to-late 1800s and early 1900s.  They are largely concerned
               with improving efficiency and productivity.


               3.2  Fayol – the five functions of management

               Fayol suggested that management of all organisations could be split into five broad
               areas:



                                                  Forecasting
                                                 and planning



                     Controlling                                                 Organising



                                                   MANAGEMENT







                              Commanding                              Co-ordinating
