Chapter 12

                           Types of organisational change

Change can be classified by the extent (or scope) of the change and the
speed with which the change is to be achieved.

The following matrix (Balogun, Hope Hailey) can be used to classify
                           change:

                                                         Extent of change

                                             Transformation Realignment

                                     Incremental
                             Speed of change
                                               Evolution Adaptation

                                     Big Bang Revolution Reconstruction

 Transformational change entails changing culture and represents a fundamental
                     shift in the organisation paradigm.

 Revolution is likely to be a forced, reactive change using simultaneous
                     initiatives on many fronts.
 Big Bang can be referred to as ‘discontinuous’ change.
