RISK MANAGEMENT (P3) - PRACTICE TASKS
EXERCISE 2
UPDATE
Paul Pau, Chief Financial Officer, has just called you into his office. He asks you to sit down and
hands you his tablet. It has an extract from Twitter showing a series of tweets from a member of
the Vita sales team responding to members of the public who have been taking part in a recent
government health programme that Vita has been involved in.
TRIGGER
“Have you seen these?
I’m not sure if everyone knows but the Newland government has been running a campaign to
improve health and wellbeing. Vita is sponsoring the event and we have representatives at
various sites and events across the country. It is additional work and done outside of their normal
sales work. We took part to try and raise awareness of Vita and it would help us to inspire people
to make healthier choices.
Zita is a well-respected member of the sales team, Rifat Taluker knows her and says it is typical of
her to go above and beyond, but says these tweets are very out of character. Zita is very sorry for
her tweets and says she has been under pressure with the additional work. She also feels the
Newland government did not give her much notice about the session she attended.
Unfortunately, I think Gal Yaluz is furious that this initiative has generated the wrong kind of
coverage for Vita and wants to take the most severe action possible.
Rifat pointed out to me that while we have a detailed Integrated Report, we do not provide our
staff with any training on social media, nor do we have any policy on staff usage of social media.
Please could you prepare a briefing note for me to present to the Board? I’d like you to look into a
few things for me.
What are the ethical issues we need to consider in relation to the incident, both from Vita’s
perspective as the employer and from Zita’s perspective?
Social media is something that is part of everyday life, but I think Gal would like to ban its use at
Vita after this. I need some information from you on the benefits to Vita of using social media as a
business communication tool.
Finally, I would like some guidance on how we should control our social media communications to
make sure we do not have future issues like this.”
