Bar Mitzvah speech of a youth from the city of Breslau, written by hand and bound in a magni cent red binding, embossed with gilded letters. Breslau, 1890.
Speci cations: [13] leaves, most written on one side, the last leaf is written on both sides. German with several sentences in Hebrew.
Unique Features: e con rmation ceremony for Jewish chil- dren, which consisted of them being examined on their knowl- edge of Judaism, was rst instituted by the Reform movement in 1815 in their Temple in Berlin, in order to replace the tradi- tional Bar Mitzvah rites which they considered to be outdated. e practice spread throughout Germany, and was adopted by Orthodox congregations as well, in a milder form - as a ceremony outside of the synagogue. By the end of the 19th century the cus- tom had spread to other Eastern European and the Middle East. In 1849 the Breslau Jewish community split into an Orthodox congregation led by Rabbi Gedaliah Tiktin, and a Reform congregation led by the Reform rabbi Dr. Avraham Geiger. In 1854 the Rabbi Zechariah Frankel Rabbinical Seminary was established, in which Jewish studies were taught from a Conservative approach. is background explains the use of the word “Con rmation״ for a Bar Mitzvah speech in Breslau in the late 19th century.

דרשת בר המצווה של נער מהעיר ברסלאו, כתובה בכתב יד וכרוכה בכריכה אדומה מפוארת, עם הטבעה באותיות זהב. ברסלאו, תר״ן 1890.
מפרט: [13] דף, כאשר רובם כתובים מצד אחד, והדף האחרון כתוב משני צדדיו. גרמנית עם מספר משפטים בעברית.
מאפיינים יחודיים: טקס הקונפורמציה לילדים יהודים, שכלל את העמדתם למבחן בקיאות ביהדות, הונהג לראשונה ע״י הרפורמים בשנת 1815 בבית-הכנסת שלהם בברלין, במטרה להחליף את מנהגי בר המצווה שנראו להם מיושנים. הנוהג התפשט בכל גרמניה, וגם קהילות אורטודקסיות החלו לקיים מנהג זה, אם כי באופן מתון יותר - כטקס חניכה לנערות מחוץ לבית הכנסת. עד סוף המאה ה-19 התפשט המנהג גם לארצות נוספות במזרח אירופה ובמזרח התיכון. בשנת 1849 התפצלה קהילת יהודי ברסלאו לקהילה אורתודוקסית בראשות רבי גדליה טיקטין, ולקהילה רפורמית בראשותו של הרב הרפורמי ד״ר אברהם גייגר. בשנת 1854 הוקם בה בית המדרש לרבנים של הרב זכריה פרנקל, בה נלמדו לימודי יהדות בגישה קונסרבטיבית. על רקע זה מובן המינוח “קונפורמציה״ לדרשת בר המצווה בברסלאו בשלהי המאה ה19.
