Students also participate in after school learning through the Tri-Town Council’s
Horizons program throughout the school year. Classes are offered at both Cole and
Spofford Pond schools. Some of the classes offered this year are Lego engineering,
sewing, theatre, holiday crafts, Zentangle art, exercise programs, pottery, and winter
outdoor activities like tracking and shelter building.
Spofford Pond and Harry Lee Cole Schools Designated as EPA “Energy Star”
Schools: Notification was received in January from www.energystar.gov that the
Spofford Pond and Harry Lee Cole Schools were again designated as Energy Star”
schools. The “Energy Star School” designation is an award applied annually that
recognizes superior energy performance and identifies a school as among the most energy
efficient buildings of their type in the nation as recognized by the Energy Star Program.
This marks the fifth consecutive award for Spofford Pond School. The Harry Lee Cole
School has earned the “Energy Star” designation for six consecutive years.
Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education: The
Spofford Pond Green Team took a trip to the State House on May 11, 2015 to be
recognized with the Secretary's Award for Excellence for their efforts in reducing energy
and increased recycling. The Green Team is led by sixth grade teacher, Ms. Boyle and is
a group consisting of concerned and interested fifth and sixth grade students with
maintaining a healthy environment.
Spofford Pond Playground and Recess Experience:
The Spofford Pond Site Council gathered a sub-committee to focus on the recess and
playground experience for students. The group will convene again during the 2015-2016
school year and will examine accessibility options for students with disabilities. This
group accomplished the following during the 2014-2015 school year:
Painted the playground with numerous games for students to play with beautiful bright
colors.
Added a buddy bench.
Added two chess/checker tables (paid for by the Boxford PTO).
Added an “indoor” recess option each day.
Capital Improvements made to Boxford Schools
Aaron Wood Building Renovations: The renovations on the Aaron Wood building,
which houses the Tri-Town Union Superintendent’s office, were started in late June 2015
and realized substantial completion in October 2015. The project consisted of the
following tasks:
Roof replacement and cupola renovation
Demolition and reconstruction of front stairs and ADA access
Insulation installation
Point brick repair
Back deck replacement
