Chapter Seven-----Round Midnight
Vance was just hanging up the telephone with Cheryl, when he heard the
gunshots. He knew somebody had probably just lost his or her life around the
corner. The area was notorious for late night killings and gunplay. Vance had
an uneasy feeling after hearing all those gunshots, it sounded like a war was
going on. Feeling restless, Vance decided to go and sit outside on the steps
and smoke a cigarette. When he was home he went outside to smoke, even
though Aunt Jessie knew he smoked she would not let him smoke in the
house. He noticed a car coming the wrong way down a one way street with
its lights off, Vance put his gun in his hand ready to do battle, if he had too.
But he knew one thing for sure; they were either the police or gangsters.
The car was a small four-door sedan, too small for a police car. At the same
time Vance began to raise his hand and aim to shoot first, he suddenly heard
a familiar voice yelling his name out. It was Frankie Man and Lou, two
homeboy’s of Babu who couldn’t be trusted. Say Vance, they just killed Babu,
let’s go, let’s go, they yelled at him. Vance had a million thoughts running
through his head all at once. Frankie Man, and Lou, was street gangsters
down to the bone.
Vance had been in gun battles before with them and Babu and he knew they
went all out, no questions asked. But this time, Vance had a lot of questions,
something told him to focus and grieve later for Babu. He knew to never make
heavyweight moves off emotions. Vance convinced them to slow down and
think, to go and park the car then come back so they could talk and strategize.
Vance thoughts were clear and focus by now, he knew New Orleans
