But none of this mattered to Dan. He wasn't the manager. Or
the assistant. Or the coach. Or even a player. He was just
somebody who wanted to contribute. When his preparatory
duties were completed he was free to relax and enjoy the
game.
He never made the tactical calls or picked the team, decided
what sub went on or who took a penalty. But you try telling
any player from that era that what Dan Roche did is of any
less importance. He was, and is, revered for his selflessness
The mention of his name invariably brings a nostalgic smile
to any face that was fortunate enough to be present at the
time. Those that were consider Dan as big a part of the
success as anyone.
My sister, Buda, will testify that Dan's sense of enjoyment
came not from the fact that he was held in such high regard
or that his hard work was recognised, but from the fact that
he was simply doing his bit for the greater good of Callan
United. Perhaps there's a lesson in there for us all.
