Whatever people say about medals and honours, there’s
nothing as valuable as the bond people develop when
playing with their local club. It’s a place where friendships
are forged and memories are made – things you’ll find
yourself laughing over many years later (like who did own
that odd sock abandoned in the dressing-room - and did
anyone ever dare wear it!)
Club life is important in a community too; it helps provide an
identity, giving something to cheer about. Who can forget the
buzz that bubbled around the day Callan got their hands on
the McCalmont Cup after a 40-year wait and the dramatic
way they won the silverware for third time in Derdimus?
The excitement as they bridged the gap back to the team of
1971 and ’72 – helped by the goalkeeping excellence of
Owen Wall – is something that will live long n the memory of
many who proudly wear the black and red.
