SURVEILLANCE OF GLANDERS AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGICAL STUDY OF ITS

                                                     CAUSATIVE AGENT

                  Background
Warming due to climatic changes and concentration of livestock popualtions and

animals on the same area due to peoples lifestyles and agricultural productions results in

the increase of occurrences and prevalence of various infectious diseases at the levels
not seen before. It was reported that 75% of human infectious diseases distributed

broadly worldwide are transmitted by livestock populations and their products.
FAO informed “Because animal infectious disease is highly important for

economy, trade and food safety of any country, and easily spred from a country to
another encompassing regions and entire world, it is claimed to cooperate all countries

via implementing special measures in case of necessity”.

Therefore, there is still risk of changing the biological properties of causative agent
of equine glanders occurred endemically in countires of Middle Asia, Northern and

Eastern Africa up to now, meanwhile climatic warming is surging worldwide. Nowadays it

is informed that prevalence rate of equine glanders is higher as compared to official report
                  in 1990 in Mongolia.

It has been necessary to perform molecular biological study in order to determine
the prevalence rate of equine glanders in horse populations of Mongolia and make

dianostic methods more improved and validated. For Mongolia, which stands at sixth
place with total number of horses in the world, the improvement of diagnosis of equine

                  glanders is economically important.

                  Goal and objectives

Antibody of causative agents of equine glanders was detected by complement
fixation test (CFT), causative agent Burkholderia mallei was isolated as pure culture,

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to determine nucleotide sequence of
specific gene and compare it to gene of international genebank for confirmation of

                  testing results.

The following objectives were accomplished to achieve above goal:

                                                                                                              45
