0.0 OSPREY MISSION SATEMENT
The Osprey Powerboat Rescue Team was originally formed to provide a Safety and
Rescue service to UK powerboat racing. This service has been successfully delivered
for over 50 years, since 1967. Over the years the service has evolved by gaining
experience of the multi-faceted and complex manners in which incidents and accidents
occur in this highly competitive sport, especially when using the medium of water as a
surface for racing.
There are multiple hazards and accidents that can be classified as generic to this sport,
however with the development of more powerful engines as well as more
hydrodynamic and aerodynamic crafts, novel methods have had to be embraced to
ensure that the safety of the participants, marshals and spectators is of the highest
priority.
The Osprey Powerboat Rescue Team have therefore moved from a system of
evolution to revolution by developing a Safety Management System (SMS) that looks
forward and is pro-active in researching possible accident scenarios that have so far
not occurred as well as analysing previous incidents to help provide a more
appropriate response where possible.
By adopting the SMS approach the Osprey Powerboat Rescue Team is therefore
ensuring that it is compliant at the very least with UK legislation. UK legislation in this
respect is amongst the most stringent in the world. Where legislation in other countries
may have different requirements, the Osprey Powerboat Rescue Team can show
compliance to the very highest level of Safety Management.
It is the intent of the Osprey Powerboat Rescue Team to provide a World Class Safety
and Rescue service to powerboat racing on a national and international basis.
