unable to perform adequately; it is obvious that surgical operations and any serious illness will
impact on a person’s abilities for periods of time that cannot be predicted; also, prescription
medicines, non-prescription medicines, alcohol and fatigue may all or singly degrade personal
        performance.

There is no need to involve a doctor to certify that you are fit, or not, to do your role in Osprey –
firstly, the doctor has no idea what you actually do in your rescue team role, secondly the certificate
may be ‘trumped’ by your team mates if they felt you were unfit.

Organisations requiring persons/crew to undergo formal medical testing such as DVLA, Microdive,
RYA, RNLI and the Merchant Navy’s Seafarer Crew Medical Certificate (ENG1), put individuals
through medical examinations for their own specific purposes. None of these closely map the roles
or diverse activities that we perform as Osprey members and, in any case as argued above, these
single ‘point-in-time’ medical assessments cannot address fitness issues at future times.

In summary ‘fitness for role’ is difficult to define in every case and individuals must be honest with
themselves and their team mates. Those who appear unwell and who lack insight or whom are
unwilling to self-declare their incapacity must accept the consensus of the team members present if
they judge that the individual is unfit.
