Living in Community
As a leading educational institution, we aspire to provide a supportive, intellectual and engaging
environment in which members thrive in all areas of life. Living in College as adults requires
balancing individual freedom with community responsibility. The Code of Conduct that you have
read and agreed to prior to entry into College is copied on the preceding page to act as a
reminder of what collegiate living involves. Looking after the College environment and one another
is everyone’s responsibility.
We believe in communal problem-solving focussing on resolving issues, not shame/blame responses
focussing on people.
Expectations
The College aims to encourage responsible and respectful behaviour and consideration for others.
Students are encouraged to moderate their own behaviour and the behaviour of others so that
College Staff do not have to become involved. In order to assist you to live responsibly at JCH, we
have found that the guidelines listed below help support harmonious community living.
Noise
Living in a small community, residents must be considerate at all times of the effect that their
behaviour and/or noise may be having on other members of the College. At all times respect your
fellow residents and actively minimise your noise. After 11pm the whole College, including the
grounds, must be quiet. Even the quietest of conversations, laughter or footsteps in the courtyard
carries up to all of the surrounding rooms. You are responsible for the noise level in your room,
created by you or others, as well as for the noise level that you create anywhere in the College.
Sound systems, computers/TVs and musical instruments should be used with restraint at all times,
and especially in the evenings. All of us have the right to, and all of us need, peace, quiet, and
sleep. Always try to communicate respectfully with your neighbours to maintain a peaceful living
environment, but if you require extra assistance in dealing with another person’s noise or behaviour,
please contact the Duty Tutor. Your complaint will remain confidential, if requested.
Parties
JCH hosts a number of parties throughout the year, which are generally closed to visitors. No parties
are permitted in College without the prior approval of the Principal or Deputy Principal. College
parties, such as Student Club Parties and the Ball, must conform to the University and Intercollegiate
Policies. This means that there will be no drinks served and no amplified music after 11.00pm, and
that pack-up and clean-up are completed by 12.00am. Additionally, all alcohol is to be served
within the strict guidelines of Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA). When the Student Club organises
an event, it is responsible for adhering to these policies and laws. The Rooftop Courtyard is closed
for use on Party nights.
Drugs and alcohol
Janet Clarke Hall is required to abide by State and Federal laws regarding drugs and alcohol.
Drinking alcohol under the age of 18 or providing alcohol to someone under the age of 18 is against
the law both within and beyond JCH.
We have a number of people at JCH who are legally able to drink and choose not to. JCH doesn’t
have a culture in which you have to drink to fit in. The main concerns with excessive alcohol
consumption are personal, physical and emotional damage, alongside community disturbance
