5 CRUISE RETAIL: USAGE, DRIVERS & BARRIERS
5.1 CHANNEL USAGE
Our research indicates that the cruise Duty / Tax Free retail channel reaches just less than 4 in 5 Asian sea cruise travellers; 79% visited a Duty Tax Free store either on-board the ship, on- land or both.
As we will outline in this section, a higher proportion of cruise Duty / Tax Free service users currently visit with the service on-board the ship, although a significant proportion also visit stores on-land at various stages during their trip. The key drivers of cruise channel visiting are: to take advantage of good prices and to treat myself.
VISIT LOCATION...
Around 71% of those visiting the cruise Duty / Tax Free retail offer do so on-board the ship, whilst around two-thirds visiting a service on- land.
However, only 36% of those visit a Duty / Tax Free service during their trip visit both a store on-board the ship and at an on-land port.
Although this is largely driven by awareness levels, this could also potentially be due to there being a lack of differentiation between the offerings, leading some travellers to believe they have seen what is on offer from the entire channel by only visiting a store on-board or on-land.
Store operators and brand owners should therefore look to drive a clear distinction between the two channels, either through the products on offer or the service provided.
