Express Scripts Canada Pharmacy

The Express Scripts Canada Pharmacy is an accredited, fully licensed Canadian
pharmacy just like any other retail pharmacy with which you may be familiar.
Although the prescription medications it dispenses are delivered directly to
patients, all Express Scripts Canada regional pharmacies (BC, MB, ON, and NB)
are accessible to any individual who chooses to bring a prescription to one of its
locations to have it filled.

Generic Drug Substitution

Generic drug substitution is a widespread cost-saving measure on drug plans
wherein the pharmacist dispenses the lowest priced equivalent (usually the generic)
version of the drug prescribed by your doctor, if one is available.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about whether a lower-cost equivalent exists for
any drugs you must take. Remember, you will not be fully reimbursed for a drug if a
lower-priced (often a generic) equivalent exists. You may still purchase brand name
drugs and pay the difference out-of-pocket if desired.

Your Plan
Manulife will reimburse the cost of the lowest-priced equivalent drug (usually the
generic). Even when a doctor writes “no substitution” on your prescription, you will
be reimbursed only for the lowest-priced equivalent. You may still purchase the
higher-priced (usually brand name) drug, but you will not be fully reimbursed.

If You Have a “No Substitution” Prescription
If your doctor has written “no substitution” on your prescription, the pharmacist must
provide the brand name drug. However, your reimbursement will be cut back to the
lowest-priced equivalent. You have several options:

1. If you want to start receiving the lowest-priced equivalent drug, your doctor
will need to remove the “no substitution” from your prescription.
2. You may apply for an exception from Manulife if there is a medical reason
why you need the brand name drug.
3. You may continue to receive the brand name drug and pay the difference
out-of-pocket.
