5Medical Regiment has surpassed itself this year when it comes to the Physical Development (PD) front.
Despite a heavy battle rhythm, we have managed to maintain some excellent Adventurous Training (AT), sport and Physical Training challenges to ensure we move the robustness and lived experience of our Soldiers and Officers forward.
In November 2022 the unit moved from 29 Pre-Hospital Group of 3 UK Division, over to 7th Infantry Brigade of 1 UK Division. This brought a whole new set of challenges for the unit and moving forward in 2023 we are preparing for Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) status at the start of 2024. With this in mind, we are gearing our PD structure to meet the arduous demands and requirements that may come across our Soldiers and Officers.
Arguably, the greatest success of 2022 within the PD spectrum was the amazing efforts of our Exercise CAMBRIAN PATROL (Ex CP) team achieving silver medals. Those who have taken part in Ex CP will know just how challenging, arduous, and emotional Ex CP can be. The unit gymnasium staff structured a PT programme for the team of 8 personnel which included All Arms Physical Training Instructor (AAPTI) LCpl J Barrass. We also provided various summer mountaineering activities including an AT expedition in the Lake District to ensure they had the prolonged training in similar and more arduous terrain. Alongside their exceptional military skills training this led the team to complete Ex CP and be the first Army Medical Services (AMS) establishment to achieve silver medals.
As ever, we have continued to strive in sport with a wealth of attendance and

competition being participated in. Within the Army Sports Trophy Competition that finished in September 2022, we placed 10th of 50 major units which demonstrates our willingness for sport. The gymnasium department are a key driver in this with AAPTIs being the lead for entries in competitions such as the Cyprus Challenge 2022 and the AMS Snowboarding Championships 2023. Internally, we have also been fruitful in competition through the commencement of the annual Commanding Officer ’s Competition which consists of 10 different sports throughout the year. We had a great turn out for the annual Officers and Seniors versus Other Ranks festive football game which was conducted before Christmas

stand-down to mirror the sporting ethos of the Christmas truce, 1914.
Alongside the other lodger unit at Gaza Barracks, we have really been driving our firm base gymnasium facility forward. Utilising funds from HQ Regional Command and the Lived Experience Innovation Fund (LEIF), we have brought the gymnasium in-line with that required to support all levels of PT and maximise the output of the Army Physical Training System (APTS) framework. With no stone left unturned we now house 40mm rubberised flooring across the gymnasium hall, MyZone technology, a dedicated spinning suite, an internal BeaverFit rig and additional Role Fitness Test (RFT) kit.
