CYBER TRAINING
By Pilot Officer Zia Mir
 A relatively early start was required on a Saturday for departure from Harrogate to HQ Greater Manchester Wing to attend Bronze cyber day. The coach of cadets included twenty from 58 (Harrogate), five from 35 (Wetherby) and one from 1953 (Knaresborough) Squadrons. Arriving at our destination at 0915 hours a fun filled educational Bronze Cyber First course was organised by OC Greater Manchester Wing. The result was a very interactive day where the cadets clearly enjoyed themselves. For most in attendance it was their first out of squadron activity and there were more than 100 cadets attending the course and the opinion on completion was that it was a very well organised and a successful day.
Some of the adult volunteers and cadets attending added their comments;
Pilot Officer Mir; the cadets were enthused, well behaved, and appear to have learnt a lot, waking them to the benefits and dangers of various cyber environments. The singing on the coach back was probably their highlight of the day, clearly full of energy. After all they are Air cadets!
Cadet Samuel Roberts - “It was an experience
I’ll never forget”. Cadet Barnes Walker - “Long
bus ride but worth it, staff were great and helpful”. Cadet Emily Fisher - “It was interesting, I learnt that coding isn’t that difficult once you break it down, I would recommend other cadets attend this course as well”. Cadet Amy Matthews - “I learned about how the internet isn’t as safe as we think it is and how people can access my information anywhere in the world”. Cadet Lucy Coatesworth - “I learnt that
Cadet Towse especially liked this activity and is excited to use the skills he learned to prank his friends and family
I can change websites and learnt the importance of correct privacy settings so strangers cannot find my private information, I would definitely recommend this course”. Cadet Colm Currie- “I didn’t know
what to expect on my first course but as soon as I got there my nerves were eased as the staff were really helpful”. Cadet James Sibson - “The bronze cyber course is an excellent opportunity to meet
and work alongside cadets from different wings and squadrons, bringing members of the ATC together for a great, educational and fun-filled day.” Cadet Daniel Greathead – “I thoroughly enjoyed the course, the instructors were very helpful, it was interesting and engaging in equal measure, it is a course I would definitely recommend”.
Cpl Freya Thomas – “Our squadron (35 Wetherby) had a brilliant and engaging day at Cyber First Adventurers. We cracked codes, edited websites, and discovered how to find lots of information about someone using only social media. Cadet Towse especially liked this activity and is excited to use the skills he learned to prank his friends and family. We all had to work together as a team to crack codes. We had to answer questions, use the Caesar Cipher and research to find the right code. Cadet Britton took the leadership role in this activity and effectively guided our team through all the tasks. On top of all of this, the staff were really excellent and many of our cadets complimented them. We would definitely recommend this course to others at our squadron and wing”.
