Page 62 - Fallen Thoughts
P. 62
I close my eyes for a moment and remind myself to breathe.
“Are you alright Parker?” Stella’s voice is quiet.
I open my eyes and look at my new friend, through tears.
“I’m okay. I just- Your moms are awesome.”
Before I know it, Stella is wrapping her arms around me in a bone crushing
hug. I’m shocked but I don’t pull away. She’s strong for her size, so I’m not sure
that I could even if I wanted to.
Eventually, we break apart from the embrace, both of our faces red, and we
finish icing the cupcakes. We decorated them with rainbow heart sprinkles.
Soon after, I check the clock, and I realize I need to go home. I stick my
head into the living room to thank Stella’s moms for their hospitality, and they tell
me that I’m welcome back anytime.
Stella walks me to the door.
I smile at her, “It seems dumb to drive one house down.”
She laughs, every time she does, it’s like a religious experience. Her whole
face lights up and I feel all my problems melt away.
As I’m walking down the driveway to my van, I hear Stella call to me, “Can
we get together this weekend? Like, go to a movie or something?”
Her face is bright red, and the blush blooms even more when I grin and
shout back, “I’d love to.”
I quietly scream to myself as I drive in to my own driveway. My eyes search
the front window for Stella, she’s not there, but she’s somewhere in the house,
right beside mine.
The door slams behind me as I enter my house. My mom is sitting in our
living room, watching the same show that Stella’s moms are watching. After the
current episode ends and the next begins, she changes the channel. I know why.
That particular episode features two lesbians shopping for wedding attire.
