Miss. Camm smiles to the class as she stands and explains what we’re doing
today: Analyzing poetry.
We have to choose one of our favourite songs and identify a bunch of
figurative language, metaphors, similes, and personification. Then we have to
explain how the song relates to our society in modern day. Everyone but me groans
at that part, this is what I love about English. As long as I have evidence to support
my argument, I literally cannot be wrong. Miss. Camm appeases the masses of the
class by saying that we can do it in partners.
Normally I would do this kind of thing alone, but Stella and I both look at
each other at the same time and grin.
Once we push our desks together, we start working immediately.
“What song should we do?” I ask them.
She thinks about it before answering, “We should probably do something
that we’re both familiar with. Um, do you know Fall Out Boy or Twenty One
Pilots?”
My chest aches and I can’t tell if I’m excited or if I’m dying, “I love TOP!”
She squeals quietly. When Stella smiles, two dimples appear on her chin. I
don’t know why, but that makes me insanely happy.
“What’s your favourite album?”
We continue talking for almost the whole class, barely getting anything done
before the bell rings.
As the students rush out, Miss. Camm calls, “These are due two days from
now, so please work on them at home!”
Stella gathers up her books and suggests we work on the assignment
together tonight, since we’ll be together anyway. I agree. Miss. Camm waves to us
as we leave.
