Her voice holds no bite, and I can’t help but smile at the fond tone that Stella
refers to her moms with.
“Moms?” I ask.
“Yeah, I guess I’m lucky. They never pressured me to be one way or the
other.”
“That’s wonderful.” I sigh.
Apparently, Stella’s mama was famous for her cupcakes in their old town, so
we decide to use that recipe.
The cupcakes surprisingly don’t take long, and as we wait for them to cool
down, we work on our English assignment.
We choose Friend, Please from Twenty One Pilots’ first album, which we
both agree is one of the best albums. Since we both know the song, we fly through
the assignment and by 6:30 we’re finished.
Stella runs around the kitchen, pulling together some supper for the both of
us as I clean off the table from our homework. We eat quickly before setting up to
finish the cupcakes.
One of Stella’s moms enters the kitchen while we’re gathering the
ingredients for the icing, chatting about whatever nonsense that comes to mind.
“It sounds like you two are having too much fun in here,” she smiles at us.
Her hair is a shade darker than Stella’s and is pulled into two long braids
with many short wisps of hair have fallen around her face. The smile on her face is
blindingly bright. She’s holding the harness of a Seeing Eye dog and wearing dark
glasses over her eyes.
Stella grins, “Mama, you’re home! We’re stealing your recipe for the GSA
bake sale tomorrow. This is Parker.”
“Hello, Parker, how are you?” Tanya leans down and unharnesses the dog.
