Write a Narrative about a Risk
B_ Read the narrative in exercise A again. Underline more examples of subject + verb
combinations such as those in the box. Then work with a partner and compare
your answers.
2 BEFORE YOU WRITE. Work in a group of three or four students. Use the information about
the writer of the narrative in exercise 1 as an example. Then tell your group about a risk that
you have taken. What were the results of your actions? Complete the chart with notes about
people in your group.

Notice how the past perfect is used in the narrative in exercise 1A.
Writers use the past perfect to describe the sequence of actions or events in the
past. The past perfect shows that one action or event happened before another
past action or event in the story.
We came to a big tree that had fallen over a stream.
