WRITING FOCUS Avoiding Comma Splices
Acomma splice is an error that occurs when two independent clauses are separated by a
comma. A comma splice can be fixed by:
* adding a conjunction (and, but, so) after the comma
* changing the comma to a period and beginning a new sentence with the second clause
* changing the comma to a semicolon (;) between the two clauses
Comma splice:
X | went for a walk in the forest, at 9 o’clock | came home.
Corrected:
v¥ | went for a walk in the forest, and at 9 o'clock | came home.
/¥ | went for a walk in the forest. At 9 o’clock | came home.
/¥ | went for a walk in the forest; at 9 o'clock | came home.
