LESSON 1 BiXe\(aden@l lenis

O 1 READ the book review. According to Edward Glaeser, why do many people want to live
                         in cities?

Triumph of the City by Edward Glaeser
We are becoming an urban species. More than half of the world’s people live in cities today,
and cities are still growing. For economist Edward Glaeser, this is good news. In his fascinating
book, Triumph of the City, Glaeser explains why cities continue to attract people.
Glaeser sees great advantages to urban life. Whenever
people live close together, they can exchange ideas, from £ £ Cities are our
business to technology to the arts. This exchange makes cities
exciting and productive centers of opportunity. species’ greatest
He also believes that cities are good for the planet because invention.)
they reduce pollution. Since urban residents don’t drive much,
cities have fewer carbon emissions.’ For example, fewer than —Edward Glaeser
one third of New York City residents drive to work as compared
with 86 percent of people living elsewhere in the United States.

Glaeser thinks that cities are good for everyone—for people of all incomes. He does not
believe that cities make people poor. He writes that we should build more skyscrapers so that
large numbers of people can live in relatively small areas. Then housing will be affordable.
However, even though Glaeser has some interesting suggestions, he underestimates the high
cost of city living. Millions of urban residents can't afford food, clothing, and housing because
they are too expensive. It is a serious problem.

Triumph of the City is a thoughtful book. Although you may not agree with all of Glaeser’s
                      ideas, you will probably enjoy
                      his lively discussion. le
