DEFINITIONS OF NEW WORDS
rant [v.] to speak for a period of time in a loud, violent, often meaningless manner
[frequently used in the expression "rant and rave"]
Don't mention the governor's name in front of Uncle Silas, because he'll rant for an
hour about how he man is ruining the state.
grueling [adj.] difficult ad exhausting
When his car broke down in the mountains at night. Stanley had to walk through the
storm for 5 miles until he could find help; it was a grueling experience.
bellow [v.] to yell and should in a loud, deep voice; [n.] a bellow, a loud shout
Don't bellow at the children that way, Fred; you frighten them.
plod [v.] to walk slowly and steadily
It was raining hard, and the wind blew fiercely; but that didn't stop the old man in
his determination to reach home. In spite of the wretched weather, the man plodded
on.
numb [adj.] without feeling in some part of the body, often because of extreme cold
Tom and Becky were almost numb with fear as the big bear drew closer and closer
to their hiding place in the cave.
peril [n.] serious danger [see jeopardy, Lesson 7]
Ferocious animals were all around. But the professional hunter told the people that
as long as they did exactly as he told them they were not in peril.
grumble [v.] to protest or complain in an irritated way, [often in a low vice]; [n.] a grumble
– a complaint
Leonora never seems satisfied; she's always grumbling about something.
gullible [adj.] easily deceived [ready to believe what one hears]
Because they have access to newspapers, radio, and television, people are better
informed than they used to be and therefore less gullible.
