ANECDOTE:

The time was 1870. The pace was a small town in Pennsylvania. The occasion was a
political campaign for the approaching county election.

The candidate, standing before a sizable crowd, ranted on for over an hour about his many
grueling experiences while helping defend his country. "Fellow citizens," he bellowed, "I was in
the Civil War and have fought the Indians. Sometimes I had no bed but the battlefield, canopy
but the sky. I have plodded over the frozen ground until every step left marks of blood and my
entire body was numb with cold. Often my life was in great peril, but not once did I grumble."

Finally, one listener, an old woman who had seen a lot life and hard times herself and was
perhaps less gullible than the other in erupted: "Did you say you fought in the Civil War?"

"Yes, my friend, I did," replied the candidate.

"You slept on the ground with only he sky for a cover?"

       "That's right."

"your feet bled when you marched over the frozen ground?"

       "Indeed they did."

"Well, then," said the old lady bluntly. "You've suffered more than enough hardships for
your country already. I'll vote for your opponent."
