Introduction to Carnatic Music
Carnatic music is a form of music widely
practiced in South India. Evidences of
carnatic music can be found in the ancient
epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Besides entertainment purpose, music was a
form of Bhakthi yoga to reach the supreme
Lord, which explains the predominance of
deities in almost all compositions.
Owing to Persian and Islamic influences
in North India , Indian classical music began
to diverge into two distinct styles—
Hindustani music and Carnatic music. The
former is widely practiced in North India and
latter in Southern parts of India.
