“I lived for 6 years in Thailand and the
Buddhist culture influences me. I wanted
the gift to thank Nature and to thank the
tree for being a watcher and a guardian. It is “I took my garden to the tree: blue
a silent meditation.” and white to share my plate
colours, rosemary for remembrance,
thyme because it smells like roast
chicken.”
“The tree is surrounded by large
“I collect the decayed leaves and fallen seeds and use
sycamore trees. I brought things
them as materials while they last. It’s winter now…
things slow down, but don’t disappear. Your leaves from my other garden - the

there, reminding me to keep you kindled in my heart.”
In many ways, the gift became a symbol of perceived connections. For some these were large connections -
between the tree and the larger forces of nature and the seasons. In other instances the connections were more
personal - the connection between the tree and ‘my garden’, or ‘my home’.
There was a strong sense of spirituality in some of the relations with the trees that were expressed through the
gifts.
