How might a SMART goal in action look? Here’s an example.
Property’s STR report shows that Monday is the day with the lowest
SCENARIO
occupancy, and that it is behind the occupancy of its comp set.
SMART Increase the running Monday occupancy index 10 points to 77 by the
GOAL end of August.
This property’s goal has:
• A clearly defined outcome
• A pre-determined time frame
• Specific end goal
With these ideas set, the property can use their
STR report, and other reports, to monitor their
progress toward the final goal.
What happens at the end of August? Depend-
ing on where they are with their goal and what
they learned along they way, the property might
decide to:
• Reset the goal and try again
• Focus on a new area of concern and set a new goal
SMART goals can be a very powerful tool to effect change at your hotel. Consider:
• What is one area you’d like to see improvement?
• How so?
• By when?
Setting your SMART goal based on report data can help you get there.
