saying, "When God is through waiting, he starts wast-
ing."
Earthquake Humor
America sits on a powder keg of massive earth-
quakes—and jokes about it. Doom humor is now
popular all over the nation. Men laugh and scoff at the
warnings of coming disasters. And when small earth-
quakes strike as warnings of what will come, the quake
jokes and sick disaster mirth begin.
I was in a small earthquake near Memphis, Tennes-
see, recently. I was on the eleventh floor of a hotel that
began to sway. It was a scary experience. The following
day, the front page of the Memphis Commercial Appeal
carried a series of "quake jokes." It angered me. That
quake could have killed many people. The paper should
have carried a headline banner screaming, "Thank God
for mercy!" Instead we insult God's warnings with bar-
barous scorn. Shame on us!
One day soon all the jokes will die out. All the laugh-
ter will vanish. And our nation will weep. Thousands
will lie buried in heaps of rubble. The laughter and
scorn will boomerang on the wicked.
God has made the sins of evil men to boomer-
ang upon them! He will destroy them by their own
plans. Jehovah our God will cut them off.
(Psalms 94:23 LB)
The Survivors
Many will survive. Among the survivors will be those
who were prepared and who had humbled themselves
before God. Those who heard the warnings and who
began to trust God for deliverance will survive. Many
unconcerned Christians will be lost, along with the
thousands of unbelievers. They will be saved as by fire.
