Page 75 - Racing Toward Judgement
P. 75
When God Halts the Harvest
God's most used, most powerful, most feared instru-
ment of judgment has been, and always will be, drought
and famine—the destruction of crops, the halting of
harvest.
Judgment is the taking away of the means by which
evil men gratify their lusts and appetites. God promised
Noah He would never again destroy the earth with an
overflowing flood, and that "seed time and harvest
time" would remain intact. Yet, years later, deadly ar-
rows of famine fell in various societies when sin was
being judged. There will never be a total suspension of
food growing and harvesting. God must feed His chil-
dren. But that does not hinder God from judging na-
tions by halting and hindering food production in var-
ious breadbasket areas.
One-fourth of the population of Ireland died in 1847
with the loss of just its potato crop. The potato famine
devastated that nation, and all the wealth of England
could not save Ireland. Drought and famine do more
damage than an invading army.
"I sent you hunger," says the Lord, "but it did
no good; you still would not return to me. I ruined
your crops by holding back the rain three months
before the harvest. I sent rain on one city, but not
another. While rain fell on one field, another was
dry and withered. People from two or three cities
would make their weary journey for a drink of wa-
ter to a city that had rain, but there wasn't ever
enough. Yet you wouldn't return to me," says the
Lord.

When God judges a nation with drought, the corn,
wheat, and meat begin to be cut off. Joel, the prophet
