The Jellyfish are Here

As if hovering in the water, with the currents, picking food with its hunting
arms, not feeling our existence. The trouble is, that we do feel its
existence. This year, on an early and unusual timing, jellyfish are seen in
every beach, but most of them are in the southern beaches. One or more
jellyfish every few meters, and in the depths as well. As they come closer
to the beach the stinging begins. “My advice for swimmers is come in the
early hours of the morning, and don’t come close at all in the afternoon
because it’s a soup, it’s a catastrophe.” In the north, Haifa for instance,
(they are) reporting few jellyfish, but they’re there. In Tel Aviv it seems
that the breakwaters create an efficient barrier that prevents them from
coming in, as long as the sea is placid. In any case, most visitors to the
beach prefer staying on the beach and to not get stung. In recent years the
swarms have been smaller and left after a relatively short time. So it’s
possible that this is just a quiet time after which giant swarms will re-
appear. (We) can only wait for this swarm to leave as well. It usually lasts
three weeks, and then we can enjoy the water again.
