The Clock Square
In 1901 the rule of Sultan Abdul Hamid II reached 25 years [25 years were completed].
He had an interesting way to celebrate half a jubilee: he built clocks in the most important
cities in the empire. Just like in Jerusalem, Tzfat and Haifa, here too a clock tower was
built, out of [from] the residents’ money, of course. One resident had a (special) interest in
donating this money. His name was Yosef Moyal. Yosef Moyal was a rich Jewish
merchant from Yaffo, whose store was close to the train station. From the day they built
the station he has no life. Everyone who passed by the station asked him what was the
time in order to find out when the train or ship from Europe is coming. In order for them
to stop bothering him, he donated the money for the big clock, and asked to put there four
clocks: Two with the time in Europe, and two with the time in the land of Israel. By the
way, it was known that the train never came on time, and it seems that people tried to
annoy him for spite.
