RACI CHEMISTRY TITRATION COMPETITION
RA
Congratulations to Year 12 students Bill
Klein, Oliver Drew and Jayden Gibson, whose
team finished in 2 Place in their group in the
nd
prestigious 2023 RACI Chemistry Competition,
held at Sydney University on Friday, 16 June.
th
Students compete in teams of three and, in
ninety minutes, must complete a set of acid-
base titrations to determine the unknown
concentration of a weak acid. The team’s score
will depend on the accuracy of the work of its
members. The best score wins medals for the
team, and they may then be invited to participate
in the National Competition later in the year.
BMGS had three teams competing in all;
with the other two teams comprising Year 12
students Meaghan Docherty, Claudia Ivery and
Casper Larkin on one team, and Charlie Burgess
(Year 12), Rowan Elliott (Year 12) and Connor
Secker (Year 11) on the other.
Both of these teams also performed admirably,
competing strongly with some of the heaviest
hitting academic schools in the state.
Apart from achieving these excellent team
results, special mention must be made of those
who attained outstanding individual results: Bill
achieved a perfect score of 0, Casper scored 1,
and Oliver and Claudia scored 9 (the lower the
score the better – and the maximum/’worst’ or
lease favourable score is 10,000).
The NSW Schools Titration Competition is a
quantitative analytical competition open to NSW
students currently enrolled in Senior Chemistry
studying towards the Higher School Certificate.
The competition operates at a number of school
and university venues throughout the State.
